My elderly neighbour is in her late 70’s and she has already had a hip operation. She has one son, who, like her, is absolutely loaded with money. She doesn’t budge out of the house, as she is scared in case her hip ‘gives way’. She had a very poor experience in the NHS hospital when she had her hip done and now she needs the other hip done. I suggested she goes private, but she says, “I’m loyal to the surgeon and the NHS hospital”. Shall I just leave her be now? She really was treated badly in hospital previously.

She will make her own mind up at the end of the day. Just keep an eye on her and look out for her which is what we all like to have done for us. My Grandpa was terrified of having his hip replaced and now hes had them both done and hes like a spring chicken!

I think so. You gave her the help, now wait for her to come to you if she wants support. She might do just as poorly privately and you don't want to get blamed. If you hear about a possible great surgeon or about a place where someone else had a great experience, you might mention it to her. However, she already knows what you know about her previous bad experience. I think you've already done as much for her as you should feel obligated to do.

Sometimes doctors make mistakes. Maybe you should suggest to her again, and tell her why a specific hospital would be better for her. She'll think twice if you give her a good reason.
