A company has banned staff birthday cards in case they breach new age discrimination laws.

Insurer Alan & Thomas has circulated cards for its 36 staff to sign for many years.

Bosses fear the messages colleagues write in the cards referring to bus passes or being 'over the hill' could fall foul of the new laws.

Staff can now sue bosses if harassed or victimised due to their age, reports The Sun.

Managing director Julian Boughton said: "The new rules are a potential minefield. Messages can so easily be misinterpreted and we don't want to offend."

The insurer has decided that only "appropriate" cards signed by bosses will be sent out to staff.

They sound like a pack of old F arts!

That is totally crazy, I'm 50 at Christmas and really looking forward to the 'old fart' birthday cards, nifty at 50 type of things, huge badges with 50 emblazoned over them, all the old jokes and insults, I can't imagine why anyone would be offended by jokey cards on their birthday, I would rather someone make the effort knowing they have thought of me, ageist or otherwise, than not to bother about me at all, lets face it when I get all my oldie stuff on my birthday I can then sue all my friends a few weeks later for been ageist and have a luxury holiday on the proceeds, crazy hey.

I suggest that in future such cards are given out blank or with an inoffensive picture of a flower or some such, but with the message: 'If you have a sense of humour and promise not to sue, we will give you the funny card that we would have given you before the new legislation.'

Another example of Mr. Blair's human rights compensation culture. This was once a fine country to live in,but now we are banned from just about anything these days because of this stupid American-style compensation culture ( no offense meant to any Americans )

Why don't they just ban cards within the office - you might all then be miserable, but at least you won't have upset any poor bastard who's a bit thin skinned!

It's a ploy to thwart the new laws protecting older generation in employment.
If they are unemployed who will support them?
The state. Then the taxes will have to be raised.
Who will pay them? The young.
