Dell dude.

Compaq is a nice machine, bogs down within a couple of months. Initial speed is incredible, after a couple of months performance is noticably slower and continues to exhibit decrease in speed when using applications.

No first hand experience with acer.

Dells perform beautifully until they are retired from use.

Screen size has nothing to do with performance or longevity.

14" is lighter then 15.4 but on bigger desktop is better to work :)
Core 2 duo absolutely - better performance.
Video card - better is Nvidia, ATI dont have good drivers :(
Memory - 1GB with (max 2 GB) to make sure you can use it with new Vista
Service - well Dell :)
