There is this arguement going on about whether the decision of who you choose to marry solely lies with you or does your pastor/parent also have a say? That is, to guide and direct you? Please, I would appreciate it if people with religion affiliation, especially christian believers could give their opinion about this question as that makes us have a similar background.

Yeah I think they do. Not to the extent of final decision. They both have the ability to give wisdom. A pastor will give you pros and cons about your decision but after the decision is made he will share in the rejoicing. A parents role is very different. They will let you know if this person will be readily accepted into the family. This is why in the days of old, the husband to be would ask the father first to give his blessing on asking for his daughters hand in marriage. You don't see this any more because the groom usually understands he's not worthy, and goes for the backdoor approach instead. Remember, the old saying you don't just marry the person but his or her family.

I feel that they can advice someone or a couple on marriage but as far as having a major role that is ultimately your decision....They aren't the one that will be living 24/7, worrying about financial situations, children etc......Just make sure that it's the one first....Follow your heart....

It lies completely with you unless you are under 18. Parents and pastor may help by asking certain questions and offering advice, but "veto" power - absolutely not...never ever

No they don't, its between you and your future spouse...Why would you let them even have a say so??? It your life not theirs...Are you sleeping with the Pastor/Parent...I don't think so...Let them get involved and your marriage will be doomed from the start...Use your brain and choose for yourself....

no, they don't, because it's you who'll be living with this person, not them.

but, of course, you should listen to what their comments are about your loved one because they can sometimes see the real character of this person that you can't.
