Yes, I think there is a difference. A confident person doesn't need to put on a show for other people in order to build up his or her esteem. They put the emphasis on "self" in the word "self-esteem". I have found that a "cocky" person is usually putting on a show. They are not actually confident or self assured. Therefore they put on a "show" of being cocky. I actually think of a "cocky" person as one who really isn't very confident and is afraid that people will find out that he or she is actually a frightened person. In order to compensate for this fear, they hide it by trying to come across as "cocky". I also consider "cocky" to be a form of bragging. A braggart or someone who toots their own horn is once again not a confident person.
Which am I? I hope I don't sound "cocky" if I tell you that I am a confident person. My sense of esteem is internal. I have had 4 different successful careers and I have made million dollar decisions on a regular basis in two of those careers. I have nothing to prove to anyone and therefore don't have any need to be "cocky". I am not full of myself because I have learned at least two lessons in life. One is that everyone has something to teach me if I just open my ears, my eyes and my mind. Second, no matter how much I learn, there's always more to learn. In fact, it seems that the more I learn, the more I realize that I really don't know very much. "Knowing" gets in the way of learning.

Confident is what you may be on the inside; a state of mind.
Cocky is how you may express it on the outside; a state of attitude.
The relationship is roughly equivalent to the way in which we may all speak but we all do it differently.
It's good to avoid loud people and cocky little bumsquirts :o)

the difference is both are confident of themshelves but cocky & stuck-up are those who are self-centred & have no respect for others. The " I better than thou" attitude instead of " I'm as good as you & I respect you equally".

Confidence is very attractive, makes you want to be around that person, admirable.
Cocky is annoying, unattractive(!!!), egomaniacs, turn off, and basically makes your skin crawl to be around this person.
