well in an eyeball you have photoreceptors two kinds you have cones that allow you to see colour and you have rods which lets you see black and white.. at night time its just the rods that work thats why in the dark everything seems to be black and white.. well animals that have good vision at night have a lot more rods than cones so their vision is much sharper at night like an owl... have a look at wikipedia..

some of night animals cant see in dark too they use their voice to know about any obstacle in their way
