Its a natural protection mechanism. The body makes it to keep the ear canal waterproof and to trap particles of dust from interferring with the working of the ear drum. The wax then naturally makes its way to the outer ear, taking the dust and other trapped muck with it. The wax is made by specialised cells in the ear canal. Be careful when cleaning the wax. Never go too deep!

The wax in your ears is there to protect your eardrum from infection,it is produced by your own body.Always be very careful when you clean your ears out, never probe them with one of those cotton buds as suggested ,you could perferate your eardrum.Always get ear drops from the chemist, they aren't particularly expensive and are much less harmful to your ears.

Protection from dirt, noise and foreign objects. If you produce too much it can cause pain. I suggest a good complementary way of getting rid of this is using Hopi Ear Candles. If you want more information look at http://www.dochsa.com/hopi
