An American Citizen does not need a visa to come to U.K and you can stay for a year but you will need a work permit

Quite right, you can't get an au pair visa (and Brits can't go to the US as au pairs either). Check http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1018721068341#Q5 - for info on becoming a domestic worker in the UK, which looks like your best bet.
