It took 4 and then the test, but I spent about 6 months driving with friends who had passed so I got experience. However you have to watch getting into bad habits if you do this as there is a style of driving required to pass your test that is totally different to how you will drive after a few years.

For me the better question would be - how many instructors did it take... I got through 4!!! I was a nighmare learner, started learning at 17, kind of did it on and off for years, finally took my test at 23 and passed first time.
My advice is try and do the whole driving thing as quickly and thoroughly as possible, I reckon in about 30 lessons, practise as much as poss outside the lessons, and drive as much as poss when you pass, so you never end up a useless driver like me!!!

I passed on my second try. I was really gutted when I failed the first time as it was just as they were introducing the theory test. if I had passed first go I would have got away without taking it but as i didn't I then had to sit for the theory - it was on paper and reminded me too much of exams at school - awful!

I had 8 lessons, which took up a lot of time as I sometimes went out all day twice a week.

2, the first guy gets in the car, and looks at my fathers "MD" lic. plate, I got "OH a doctor huh", guess he did'nt like Dr's, "FAIL", the second guys pen ran out of ink, he said "Take me back for another pen", he split, I thought I failed, it came in the mail "PASSED", go figure. Most driving test examiners are "DICKS", especially with young male drivers.

But it was 2, followed by 18 months practice with a mate, then 3 just before a test.
It's amazing hpow many people above think that you asked "How many test's did you take?"
