In my opinion the only one who knows what he is talking about is the Army chief. He knows what is happening there. It is easy for the politicians and for us to say from our houses, 'stay there and bring the peace' but we have absolutely no idea about the real situation there. The soldiers only know and the officers and their opinion should matter more than ours because they sacrifice their lives everyday. So a statement like this that is official and made by the chief of the Army and not just an officer means that things are very difficult and the army has no longer the will to fight someone elses war! Many have died, it is enough now, bring them home to be with their families in their own country that they love and die for.

Like everyone else, you have read the headline but not the content. He is most certainly NOT saying that we should get out of Iraq. (Incidentally, he also believes 100% in our presence in Afghanistan.)
His interview was released through the Ministry of Defence with their approval. What he is ACTUALLY saying - I heard him say it - is that, in some of the southern provinces, British forces should leave as soon as possible as the Iraqi police and armed forces are ready and able to take over.
He says there is "Not a cigarette paper" between what he is saying and what the Minister of Defence and Tony Blair want. He also says that a British force needs to be in Iraq for the foreseeable future and that there will be British forces there for a long time to come in an advisory role.
Sorry peaceniks - you need to read the whole bit, not just the front page of the Daily Mail.

He might not sack him. Although he is only in office since August, so he could get the boot still. It is significant that a person in his position comes to the conclusion AND mentions it. Usually those guys are airheads who are happy when they can fire a gun.
Of course Danak is right and we should get out as soon as possible. We shouldn't have been there in the first place. The Iraq war will go down in history as the stupidest thing ever. And the GOP and the neocons are to blame for that.

As an American, I find that very courageous. Our military leaders lose their commands, and end up in early retirement if they dare backtalk the leadership.
The only way we ever hear their stories is if they get out of the military, and then tell all.
I hope this pressures Blair into getting out, putting even MORE pressure on our own loser here (I am speaking of Bush, of course), to do the same. Isn't it obvious at this point?

fact: i could truthfully do it. If I have been Harry at that precise time, to be straightforward, i could be happy to die and get away from the carnage, besides as shop a number of of lives. Dare: a million. i truthfully did some thing like that once in an entire lecture room! Random, creepy issues like that often pass on with my HP crazed friends and that i in college.

His comments are massively embarassing, but firing would make things look worse. It would look like Blair can't stand to hear the truth, and most people would believe a general's assessment over a politicians. They will lean on him heavily to take back what he said, but we know what he really thinks. I was surprised - I would have thought, idiotic as the invasion was, that pulling out would be destabilising.
