I have met one and they were one of the nicest people I have met in a long time, they have adjusted to what they are and live like a normal person, this particular one lives in a small country town and most people arn't aware of their situation.

For a start:
"The term 'hermaphrodite' has historically been used to describe people with ambiguous genitalia or biological sex. The broader term intersexual is often used and is preferred by many such individuals and medical professionals."
Usually, in biology hermaphrodite is a term used to describe a plant or animal that has the ability to reproduce on its own. Typically hermaphrodites only occur in invertebrates and while ambiguous gender or both genitalia can occur as a deformation in most vertebrates they would never have the ability to reproduce alone. This is a common misconception of human hermaphrodites.
The % of people is incredibly low. A majority of what people think are 'hermaphrodites' are actually transsexuals (chicks with d*cks to put it bluntly).
I haven't ever met an intersexual/hermaphrodite but I've met a transsexual (male to female).

There was a girl who took a college class I took who gave a speech about her being a hermaphrodite. She was very pretty and you never would have known she was one by looking at her. She said that her male organ was semi-functional when she used the restroom but that it didn't otherwise really affect her life.

It's theoretically possible for anyone to meet a hermaphrodite and not be aware of it. I think the only way to verify is to look at their junk.

While working in the nursery at a hospital many years ago, one of the babies had a more than average size clitoris. It was tested to see if it had more estrogen or progesterone. I didn't find out to see what became of it. If it was treated as a boy (with a vagina) or girl (with a big clitoris)
