How can I tell whether a user has logged on to his or her mailbox?

Is there any way out to do it without sendind the person an email containing syware & then doing other notorious things.
I MEAN IS THERE ANY CLEAN SOFTWARE OR NET SERVICE OUT THERE WHICH WOULD HELP ME. :-)

i think in yahoo you can tell if a person is online or not
