Just as an example, our drive cost about £3K including materials. This was 600 foot long and 10 feet wide. It took 5 lorries of tar at either £180 or £400 per load ( sorry can't remember which ) and was 75mm thick onto solid concrete.
Hot laid tar is definately the way to go, the cold stuff lasts 2 minutes.
Ours has had lorries and tractors over it regularly and still looks great after the first year. Use a proper groundworks firm

I've never seen or heard of "Red" asphalt. Where do they have this? Anyway, if concrete isn't totally busted up you could probably get by with a 2" overlay. You'll need driveway dimensions and a local contractor since asphalt is mixed at a centralized mixing plant and not on site for small non-commercial jobs like a driveway.

You need to contact a firm that works with asphalt. Look in the Yellow Pages, and contact several with the measurements of your drive. If someone knocks on your door, offering to do it for £50, send them away with a flea in their ear. Red Asphalt is VERY expensive.

No, the asphalt used on roofing has a lower melting point. It would make your driveway sticky and would not hold up to the traffic.
