Wow what a question... Knopfler to me is simply amazing, not just for his unique playing style and tone, fingers no fingers man that solo on Brothers in Arms..I like both very much Iove early Clapton with Mayall "Rambling on my Mind" etc etc until Blind Faith to be honest..but there is something about Knopfler's playing, feeling, vibe that gets to me : ) but when they played together was like the perfect pair..wonderfully executed solos a lot of improv, a day in heaven.. love Fenders for some bluesy stuff its the perfect work of art, but have played mostly Gibsons also a piece of art, (Gary Moore knows how to get the best out of a Gibson : )..they suit me better, killer tone too ...hmm a Black Beauty needs me!

Cheers

Very different musically -- both Knopfler, Clapton and Gibsons and Fenders.

Both Knopfler and Clapton are obviously exceptional talents and were in the vanguard of a very vibrant musical revolution in Britain... Clapton's early blue-eyed blues work made him one of the most respected guitarist both in the UK and in North America. Knopfler came along in the late 70s and just as Clapton and his mates had done for the blues, injected a strange Englishness into an American-based musical genre -- country.

The choice of guitar is also biased somewhat by the type of music it's going to be used to play... Fenders -- especially strats -- with the speed of their action and the slim comfortable neck lend themselves to a solid flat pick style which is more a blues/rock technique. Telecasters, have a more country sound and I love 'em but there is still an immediacy and directness in the tone they produce. Gibsons sound more rounded... and the Country Gentleman (Chet Atkins box) definitely sounds like it's being played in the back seat of a Cadillac crossing the Louisiana state line even if you play God Save the Queen on it. In fact a Gibson with Bigsby pickup and a Whammy Bar is a beautiful machine and every guitarist should have a bash at playing one... pure magic.

All that said, there are bluesmen and women who play Gibsons and lots of traditional country players using Fenders. And then there are plenty who play both... because a good guitar is a terrible thing to waste...

Interesting question and a good way to wake up this Friday morning.

Knopfler is not bad because he plays with his fingers only, but Clapton is more sofisticated.
