Perhaps they never heard it correctly in the first place and believe they are pronouncing it correctly. Unless corrected by the age of 5 it is difficult to change words people use without a conscious effort. Some are simply slang or how their family pronounce it such as axe for ask which I believe is originally Jamaican Patois. Other examples are people who say "ya get me" after every sentence or "is it" as a reply to anything asked. Far worse in my opinion are the constant swearers who feel the need for the F word before every noun.

I have only come across one person who said crips instead of crisps and she was from Hong Kong and English was not her first language. When you compared her competency in English to my grasp of any language other than English I don't think I had the right to nitpick about little things like that!

I have a whole host of those irritations such people that say Breakpast instead of Breakfast and the constant stream of advertisements that do not say pounds such as "only 4950 instead of "four thousand nine hundred and fifty pounds" It doesn't sound any cheaper in price saying it their way, I think we are all past the '£9.99' instead of £10 influence.

My 2 year old daughter gets a good beating everytime she says crips. Never did me any harm.
I cant stand it when people (particularly southerners) pronounce drawing as draw ring, and when supernanny says somethink and anythink.

ARGH! My mother does this! (just to be funny, mind) She doesn't know that Crips is actually a gang in America...
EDIT: Oh, God, my boyfriend says 'basketti'. But then, he is dyslexic.

Possibly parents pronounced the word the same.or if not might have thought it was cute the way they said the word as a child.Of course old habits die hard.

I don't know why, but I get annoyed with people that say "bought" instead of "brought" or "aks" instead of "ask"
or that song "Popular" where the singer pronounces it "populer"
Maybe they do it deliberately to annoy

I couldn't agree more, unless a person has a speech impediment, there is no excuse for not using proper English, other than laziness!
