Dear Aspirant,
Portfolio is nothing but your work's physical appeal to the other person.
Few things but are really must:
Originality, Neatness, Anything that conveys its your own work.
Portfolio if having some years work are best for they tell lot about you and your work.
Kindly include your latest first.
Also if you could write something in precise about the work shall be adding value, like a photo graph if accompanied by the location, date, why and any specifice meaning about it tells that the person's work is not only original but also very well taken care of.
Portfolio is like your kid going to a new school.
What you do? you do your best to make the kid presentable and teach him things so that ppl know whose kid is he.

A portfolio contains samples of an artist's work. Art students use pieces done in school, professionals showcase samples of actual jobs done for pay, and sometimes pieces they just particularly like of their work. Only the best of your work should be included, especially in a professional portfolio. The object is to impress someone with what you can do, not to show off amatuerish samples.

Put in one or two pieces of some of your early work so they can see how you have progressed. But mostly put in your best work. Include different styles and different subjects.

Most animators use drawing and painting programs to draw their stuff for animation but those are things people learn in art school. If you can learn a program like Illustrator which is a vector program and like the main program for drawing.. And learn as much as you can about Photoshop. Good luck with your quest!

Include your best 10-15 pieces. Drawings, illustrations, paintings, computer produced pieces...anything that pertains to the program. If you have a strong focus, make most of the pieces about that particular focus. But if you are versatile, make sure you show many different pieces that show off your skill with different media, style, concepts or technique. Put only strong pieces.

Make sure everything is cleanly presented. Eg., no dog hair, crooked pieces, etc. Good luck.

my experience is these private institutes don't bother about portfolio, because u have to do work on computers, u must finish ms office, and DTP before going in for animations... because u have to know basics... any way keep your portfolio ready with all styles and techniques of drawings... your final portfolio will be on CD after completing your course...

Try to make skills of drawing or go to an artist and take pictures from him and show the pictures to school

PACKAGING! That is extremely important! While all the suggestions given here are good, this one seems to have been left out. I remember I went around with my porfolio in a regular leather folder while looking for a copywriter's job. While it was appreciated, I was surprised to see the response when I used a self made folder out of veneer with collage work and finally inserting it in a large plastic cover, once again, self made out of plastic, duct tape and other colorful creative materials.
