Alie is a lie, but some lies (i.e. white lies) are acceptable in order not to hurt others or to give a compliment. So thank you I know I am looking nice (white lie here)

There was a film once , where it was made impossible for someone to lie....
it was a comedy but it illustrated just how often we lie not to cause offence...
It would be good to have a word that identified the acceptable lie ( white lie) from the deliberately deceiving lie.....
So the answer to your question is yes and no

It's wrong to lie but some lies are quite harmless like when your man calls in the middle of the night & asks if you were sleeping but because you can't get enough of his voice, you go on & say, "just about" when infact your eyes are all huge & red!
Now tell us (the truth now), what lie have you told because posing this Q means you need some sort of re-assurance.

It's a bit more complicated than that. Should one go around telling kids there is no Santa Claus - or allow the lie? Would you spoil a surprise party by telling the truth?
Of course, by definition a lie is a lie.

Yo can lie for a good reason or a bad one,it depends on the circumstances.Society would break down if everyone told the truth all the time, you have to be 'diplomatic' to get along with family, friends & neighbours, otherwise we'd be at each other's throats most of the time.

a lie is always a lie, but its not always wrong....sometimes the truth really does hurt too much....watch trisha, i'm sure some of the truths that come out on that really could have stayed inder the carpet, and its only because of the ruthless production team that makes these poor defenceless ppl open up that they come out and they really do play with ppls lives....tv shows like that, where the truth is all important, is the lowest common denominator, agreed?

Don't agree. If a lie is a lie no matter what, the lie we tell kids about Santa Claus is wrong.

If a lie is to protect you from something you from a situation you have caused, then yes.
If it is to protect someone else then no, you don't have to lie as such though just plead ignorance.
Lying when you know someone or something is in the wrong is very wrong.
However everyday in court, bariisters and solicitors present their cases to a judge even if they know its a lie.
So you can make of that what you like.
