Personal space is a learned cultural trait. Each society has norms of behavior that indicate relationship and privacy issues. Some societies are much more accepting of closeness wile others prefer more distance.

Within each society the actual shape of person space differs as well. Usually people are more sensitive to what is close to their front and not so sensitive about what is behind them. You can test this when you are in a line waiting for something. The space in front of you is basically YOUR MINIMUM Frontal personal space PLUS the MINIMUM behind space acceptable to the person in front of you. If you turn around, the person that was in back of you will feel uncomfortable since the distance is less than what is needed by 2 frontal personal spaces.

Sex also plays a role. The personal space of a woman is usually larger then that of a man, although the mixture is interesting to see. That is, the differences are noticeable in the cases of two women facing each other, two facing men or a woman and strange man or a woman and male friend.

;-D The acceptable distance changes in each situation. When someone enters your personal space it is called an invasion.

Because it is normal. It is called "territoriality". Like inhabitants of the jungle, each one of us wants a breathing space, a hunting space to survive, and a procreating space to ensure posterity...
Hehe.. We all are predators with a vital space we scan for survival.

All I can say is it creeps me out when someone I'm not close to or who is a stranger invades mine. I will subconsciously back away and try to stay away from them.
