I have a Gateway MX6448 that operates at an extremely high temperature. The CPU fan kicks on at 70C, and cools down to 65C before shutting off. How can I manually control the fan or change the temperature at which it engages? Also, is the fan software controlled or hardware controlled? I realize that it reads temperature to control the fan, but is there software that tells it when to engage or is this a physical property of the laptop?

I have attempted to access options through the BIOS settings, and there are no options for fans. I am already using SpeedFan to monitor the temperatures, but it will not control them for me. And although there appears to be no reason to control this, I have a need to control this as I am not comfortable with 70C temperatures burning my leg everytime I use my laptop.

A program called notebook hardware control will allow you to set the fan how you like. Also allows for tweaking that will give you better battery life.

If your laptop fan discharges under the laptop, just put something underneath its four corners to raise it up about an inch or so. If not, then you should look into the thermocouple that controls the fan operation. My advise to you is... Do not horse around with laptops yourself, regardless how good you think you are; just take it to a shop that specializes on laptops or try to have Gateway look at it.

There are a few programs that can control your fans on the net. Good news... they're freeware. I don't realy know much about your mboard but, if it supports fan speed control than you should be able to use them. Just search for SpeedFan or MBM5 or other products like that. If the mboard doesn't support fan speed control you can always use them as system monitors... good luck

u can watch u r fan's rpm(rotations per minute) in bios setup menu.
as per u r question it requires another fan to implant in ur cpu otherthan on processor.just find a 12v & Gnd terminals from smps output & buy new another cpu fan(which is of very low power cunsumption) & fix near to the processor.it does'nt harm u r pc / damage smps .keep original fan as it is .don'n remove that old fan.

There appears to be no necessity to control the cpu fan.
