So when one right mouse clicks in word, excel, powerpoint, IE, desktop etc., the additional function that i want will show up. How about changing a common function such as "Insert" so that it has subfunctions of my own design???

the only way i know of would be to add a shell extension into windows. Much like how antivirus software adds "scan this document" or winzip adds "unzip this here". These will only show up in explorer however. Adding right click options in other programs would be very difficult since each programs handles the menu options.

I agree with the first couple of answers. Do you see the little Excel icon on the file icon picture? If you don't, it's probably a text file or some other kind of file that windows explorer won't automatically associat Excel with because the file could also possibly be pulled up in other programs such as Word or some text viewer program, etc. Depending on the file type, you may not want to associate Excel as the default program to open that file. Basically Windows Explorer doesn't know what program to send the file to. That's why the first answerers said you need to right click the file and choose Excel to open the file if you are going to do it from Windows Explorer. The reason why Excel opens it from Excel is because since Windows knows you are trying to open it from Excel it will try opening it in Excel. If it can open the file, it will. If it can't it will show some message saying that Excel can't open the file. If you want Windows Explorer to know to automatically open the file in Excel, the best way is to either save the file as an Excel format or to give the filename a .xls extension. There could be the slight possibility that your windows registry for Excel is messed up. But you need to be extra super careful if you mess with the windows registry and you should ALWAYS create a back up of the registry before doing so. The registry is like the heart and soul of your computer. You mess the registry up and your computer virtually dies.

If you are talking about the built-in right click menu of other applications, then you simply can't.

If you want to insert a right click menu in your own application, I can show you how doing that using VB.

I have been in this since 2000.

I would advise against using VB for this purpose unless you want your PC to run like a dead tortoise as a result. Use a real language like C++.
