pm (private message) is generally used in chatrooms...since rooms are "public" everyone can read your posts, so with a pm you can communicate with somebody else in the same chatroom but only that person will be able to read the post/message
im (instant message) is basically a message sent using one of the many instant messengers out there (AIM, YIM, MSN, etc). in a way, an im is a pm, but a pm is not always an im

PM is personal message usually used in forums and website discussion forums and IM is instant message those with yahoo and google talk .
