All the official advice now says to wait until 6mths to introduce solids... if you really want to introduce early as your baby is clearly demanding more food then their daily milk intake, you can start adding a little cereal in their bottle but just a couple spoons of it so that it is still very runny. I was breastfeeding and didnt like pumping so I never really did give her cereal. She started out on carrots and peas I think it was when she was 6mths. At first it isnt for filling them up, it's for getting them used to having something more solid in their mouth. Just a few spoons of pureéd veggies and that's enough. Dont over do it, otherwise you might risk your baby refusing what should be her main source of food, milk. This is very important, dont let her eat until she's full like some have said!

Definitely talk to your Dr. It really bothers me that everyone just automatically says, no baby fod until 6 months. And yes that is true especially for breastfed babies and some formula fed ones. But for instance my son has been on cereal since he was 2 months. He had reflux really bad and our best solution was rice cereal in a bottle. Neither my husband or I have allergies and we also chose this method of treatment instead of medication. My son was also a big baby and is still a big baby. He's 17 lbs and 26 inches at 4 month, in the 90th percentile. About 2 weeks ago I started noticing that he wanted more than 6oz of milk at a time. At my 4 month apt with his Dr. He told me I could start giving him some fruits, one at a time, for a few days at a time to make sure there were no allergic reactions. He also told me that at 5 months I could add veggies. Anyways, my son is happily eating pears now and I'm about to add apple sauce.
I say all of that so say that every baby is different. If you think that your baby is ready for it, ask your Dr. Start out with rice cereal, but I'm sure that your Dr will tell you that. I only feed my son solids once a day for now and I just fix 2 tsp of pears and mix it with a tsp of cereal (I thin it out with a little water) and sometimes he will eat it all and sometimes he won't. Your baby will let you know. When I think he's ready I will start feeding him twice a day. You just have to go with your gut feeling! He or she is your baby! I would talk with your Dr and go from there!

Hi....so happy you have this sweet bundle of joy....I know you must enjoy every minute with your new one....they don't stay a baby very long. To get to your question, years ago people fed their babies earlier but now I hear the doctors put off solid food until they reach a certain age. If I were you I'd call a medical doctor and find out so you do what's best for your baby. Many years ago we gave our children very runny cereal at first then added fruit to their diet...the doctors usually tell you to wait between each new food a few days...before you start a new one...so if they are going to have allergic reactions you will know to stop feeding them...that certain food. To be safe call a doctor for instructions so your baby gets off to a good start. Best of luck!

If you start the baby on solids now he/she could develop some food allergies or intollerances. Give your baby six oz of formula every 5 hours and some rice cereal before bed at night (only about 2 oz). It will keep the tummy full through the night but otherwise babies at this age still primarily depend on milk so don't rush the solids. However if your baby is really dissatisfied then talk to your doc. Good luck!

Really it's a matter of how much he/she wants. Kids are real good at letting you know things. Of course you need to make sure they're getting enough. If she/he's not eating enough food make sure to supplement the milk.
Remember not to get into the habit of overfeeding, or giving out bites when it's not a regular eating time for the baby. Don't want to get into bad eating habits at a young age. Otherwise just play it by ear and I'm sure you'll do just fine.
I hope this helps ! ! ! !

It is recommended to wait until 6 months to start baby foods. Food for the first year is for parctice only. They don't get any nutrition from it. Breastmilk or formula is the main food source for the first year and should make up 76% of their calories. Here's a website to help. It tells you how much they should have at what age.
