The Cheap Alternative is wait till the Snow Fall!

Get Your carpet or Rug out on the lawn-Spread Snow all over the Rug-With a Clean yard Brush sweep the Snow into the Carpet(Do Not Scrub).

Make sure the snow penetrates all of the carpet surface.
Hang the carpet/rug over a washing Line or Small wall-Bang the rug with the stick of the broom.
(Removing Excess Snow and Ice)

The Snow will melt a Little and then Freeze(If the Conditions are right). This will absorb the Dirt and Dirt particles out of your Carpet as well as Re-Fluffing the Pile.
(Making it look like NEW!!)

Leave to Dry in a garage Over night(Naturally-No heat !)
Re lay the Carpet/Rug- You will be amazed How clean it comes up!!!

Probably best to purchase one of many a commercial carpet cleaners on the market. Most are sprayed froma can and then worked in with a brush if there are bad stains. Once the cleaner dries, one usually vacuums the carpet. If the carpet is really dirty or dingy, you may want to rent a carpet cleaner for a more professional cleaning job.

The general principles of cleaning. Chemical with acidity or pH>7 can be used to remove "dirt" particle without damaging the carpet. So just look for any cleaning chemical with pH>7. The higher the better, for the "real dirt one" pH 11-12 will help. Just follow the chemical instruction on the label. Soak the upper carpet with de-concentrated chemical for certain period then rinse using flowing water otherwise soak all part of carpet for certain period then rinse using flowing water. Be aware to use apt personnel protective equipment such as hand-glove to avoid from direct contact to your skin as it may feels itchy. Good luck!

Rent an inexpesive carpet extractor from your local hardware store and they can tell you how to use it, it's very simple to use. It will save you a bundle on hiring commercial cleaners. I own a cleaning bus.
