I've read it. I read it often. I was reading portions of it earlier this week to answer some questions on this forum. And you are incorrect in some of our assumptions.
In this country, we have, not a true democracy, but a representative one. We vote for the people we want to represent us to the government. After that, we have no control over what they do. We get control every two, four, or six years when we have the oppotunity to throw out the current stock and vote in some new ones.
The Constitution also says that the President of the United States is Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces. He can therefore order them to do whatever he wants. Now, the Constitution also says that it takes an act of Congess to delare a war. But it doesn't limit the President's use of the armed forces to only declared wars. The President can order them to go anywhere, at any time, and do any thing. All Congress can do to stop him is cut funding for the enterprise.
So, you are correct, there are a LOT of people in America who really don't understand the Constitution.
You're one of them.

I have read the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. I have a copy of each at my home.

You're not looking at "We the people" in context.
"We the people... in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility."
That does not say, ask every Joe his opinion on every issue, it says that the people are trying to make a new government. A true democracy (which originally met "mob rule") is not an effective form of government. This is why we elect representatives. You want to change something, do it through your votes. Elect people with similar views. Oh, and why don't you go take a look at the Constitution and Bill of Rights while you're at it?

I've read the constitution numerous times, as well as the bill of rights, as well as the articles of confederation, as well as the federalist and anti-federalist papers. And I would agree with you. Our federal government has gotten out of control. But, the idea that everything is to be decided by the plurality of the people is incorrect. The only representatives in government that were originally elected by the people were the member of the House of Representatives. The President wasn't intended, or not intended, to go to a vote. It was up to the states to prescribe how they cast their electoral votes. They just happen to use elections rather than appointments. Same with Senators. They were originally left up to the state with the thinking they should be appointed by state leaders who were more informed on the issues than the masses. The President, nor the government, was meant to interfere with people's day to day lives the way they do today. We need to downsize our federal government significantly. If it wasn't for FDR's New Deal, we wouldn't be in a lot of this mess. He should've just kept his hands off and let private industry eventually step up and pull us out of the depression. He left a legacy of social programs that have bloated our government way beyond its intended size.

Yes, I have read it since being out of school. I think that a lot more gets read into it than was actually intended. One must remember the status of the individuals who wrote it.

Actually, I think they are making it illegal to have one......
That and they are dismantling it right before our eyes. It may just be a piece of paper before long.
