No, Shadow, never that . . . but one dark night years ago, just out side Sacramento, as I was driving along a levy a freight train emerged from my dashboard and raced past my ear with a deafening clash of steel on steel, each car chasing the next, until it disappeared out a back window and all that was left was the plaintive call of its retreating whistle to send a shiver of longing down my back.
