For instance, why can a human choose to hold its hand in a fire when it knows that the fire will burn it and an ape can't. Force of will, human will power, human thought... We have it, usually animals don't. Surely you've heard of dogs and even cats who've rescued their owners from fires? Or were the creatures just scared and made a lot of noise in order to save themselves? We just have more evolved brains, useful for just such efforts, and the reason why we own this world 99% of the time.

Animals can do it if they thought it served some kind of "purpose" or if they were trying to "prove" something.

Animals do sometimes choose to do things that they know are dangerous for the purpose of defending the ones they "love". They'll put themselves in harm's way to protect their family and "friends" rather than run to save themselves. This might be considered by some to be a choice, but it's not like they are doing it to prove they are brave, or to win a medal.
