find a baseball bat, and keep smashing your computer until it operates properly

The usual way is to go to Start: Turn Off Computer: Restart. Sometimes, if a program is misbehaving badly the computer won't restart, so you could press all at the same time. This will bring up the task manager which has a shutdown selection on it. That should work. During the process, you may be informed of programs that failed to terminate. You can press the end-now button on the screen.
If all of these methods fail, the only recourse is to remove power from the computer. Sometimes the front power button might not turn it off, and you may actually have to disconnect power by turning off a power strip or disconnecting the power cord from the computer.

um, you can't. I'm sorry to inform you, but re-booting PCs was outlawed in 1934 under the Internet Addiction Act. Article IV section 12, clause 83 :

"Any compulsive interweb user must abide discreetly to all rules herein:

...
...
rule 12: Re-booting a PC is dangerous and harmful to ones health. Doing so will result in catestrophic failure to ones hippopotemus gland. Any perputrator caught re-booting will receive a Class A felony with upto life in Jail and a 130,000 fine. "

Don't reboot, it's the law.

Go to the start menu and choose "turn off computer" and then you should be able to choose restart or actually turning off.

If your computer is frozen (obviously you wouldn't be writing to yahoo answers on the same computer), you can press control, alt, and delete keys at the same time. this should give you the opportunity to restart (possibly by pressing the combination a second time)

Hope this helps :-)
