Life doesn't lead you anywhere...YOU do!
Don't make the same mistake I did. I didn't know what I wanted to do either and I was thinking just like you. I didn't realize that I could START college and take some courses and decide as I learned, finding out where I might fit in. If I could give anyone any advice in this life it would be to GO to school and if you don't know now what you want to do give yourself a chance and you will figure it out later. No sweat. Go to school and enjoy it. Believe me, I wish I had done that. There are many jobs/careers out there that you wouldn't even think existed. Don't shortchange yourself now. You will thank yourself later in life for starting down the right path now. Just think of the possibilities you will have down the road! How exicitng!
Take some courses. Find out what you like.
Good luck!

Life takes you where you choose. The path doesn't lead you - you creat your own path and then follow it. Make alist of goals for yoursel - where you want to be & what you want accomplish in a year, 5 years, 10 years. You can always change it. Not many people who start college know what they want to do with their lives. But that's why you go. The exposure you receive there will be invaluable. You may change your major a few times, but that's okay. In this day and age, having a college degree is like having a high school diploma when our parents were our age. The important part is that you get your degree, no matter what it is. Education will expose whole new worlds to you. Go to college! Good luck to you.

there is no need to rush. Take up a job and start saving, until you find something you enjoy or are interested in. No, you shouldn't have your parents drag you through life, but you should wait a year or two before you think about taking a big step out. You need to make a foundation for yourself, then you can build, and if you dont like what you have built, rebuild. Thats what is so great about time, each minute is new oppurtunity for change. There is something that you love to do, even if it is playing videogames, or making cartoons at the least. Take that something and turn it into a career because the best jobs are the ones your truely passionate about.

Remember, you don't have to be tied down to one thing, there are so many oppurtunities out there, there just waiting for you.

Over here we can be free and frank, since our identities are not disclosed. So, excuse me if I take some liberties - I assure you I am sincere in my response.

I think your real problem may be that your parents are rich and you know you do not have to do anything to just survive. At the same time, you are proud enough not to want to depend on them whole life.

High school is certainly not enough formal education.
Let me also tell you military is not an option for you as an immigrant without a birth certificate.
Picking up just any job right now is not advisable for two reasons - firstly, as I said you need more formal education and once you get into a job, it then becomes difficult to switch back to studies. Secondly, how can you take a job when you are not willing to even go to college without first deciding what career you want?

Answer is plain and simple. You have to make a preliminary choice of a career right now and go to college accordingly. In making that preliminary choice of a career, take advice from your father - have you discussed with him? If for any reason, you are not comfortable with his advice, just proceed based on whichever subject interested you the most in your last exam. Another possibility is to consult the teacher you liked most in your high school.

Finally, do not believe any one who says once you make a choice in college, it is irreversible - no, it is not. Within a reasonable period, everything is reversible.

If you are basically fit, give serious thought to going into the military. There are lots of advantages, and it will probably give you time to decide what you want to do when you get out, as well as providing the benefits to go to college once you decide what you want to pursue. I agree there's no point to going to college until you have some idea of what you want to study.

If that idea does not appeal to you, what about signing up with a temporary agency or two, and working at different assignments until you find something that can hold your interest?

Also, you could be doing research into various career options. This would need to be accompanied by some self-analysis about your strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes. You might pick up a copy of the latest "What Color is Your Parachute?" which can help a lot in this research and self-analysis. You can do this while working temp, of course.

oh yes! Do you mean those times when we are thrown so suddenly into the moment that we have no choice but to discard everything and after a timeless moment we realise that we have even forgotten to breathe? I just asked the same question a couple of days ago in another QA site - its nice to be able to answer too. I just had one of those moments. It is winter solstice here and I woke to see the sunrise and while I am watching a magpie made the most beautiful song from a nearby tree. It was like a gift to me. But I get those moments often even an ant stretching to reach over a twig will do it to me. Sunrises and sunsets and the shine of the sun on the water. Dolphins playing in the surf. A baby smiling. Rainbows! I could go on and on. Life is so beautiful I have no idea why we sometimes focus on a promised paradise when we are living amid such wondrous and profound beauty.

Yup. Go find a job. If you find you don't like it, look for a different one. When you have some inkling as to what you want to work at, go to college.

You are right that it's a waste of money to head off to college with no idea what you want to do. You'll be a lot smarter when you go if you've worked at something--and you won't spend your time partying.

There's no reason you have to go right after school. The only advantage is mom and dad are footing the bill and you don't have to worry about finding a job right away.

Join the club. Get a job, entry level, and see what's out there. NOBODY in the past 20 years has known their life's path right out of high school. But a general degree like business or somethign isn't a waste. I got a degree in 4 languages (because I love it) and I do computer networking!

People are not lead down a path. Your parents don't want you to stay a child. You are not required to go to school, but you are required to act. Use your gifts and pursue your interests. You could try a million things. Do something. At least you will learn what you don't want to do. What an adventure!

Go to college undeclared, pick a major, meet some friends, maybe a girl, graduate, get a job you like and maybe get married and have some kids, get a house and a car and take vacations when you can afford them. In short get a life. That is how it is done, one decision at a time, but; time moves quickly and before you knowit many of your opportunities to choose are soon behind you. Choose wisely but choose now.
