Hot water - petroleum
Cold water - protein stains (grass, blood, etc...)

But check out www.tide.com, they actually have great tips for stains and I might be wrong.

Cold water is generally best for most things. There might be a couple of stains like grease which work better in hot water but most of them come out best in cold! Blood especially!

I agree with you...hot water sets stains.

Hot water gets plain old dirt out better.

Hot water is better, but you should use some stain remover before doing the laundry (you can find it in the grocery store, they are liquid or sticks), and it works very well.

It all depends on what you are washing, if you are doing a white wash it is better to have hot water. cold water is used if its colored wash because you don't want the colors to run. If your white wash is not that dirty it also can be put in cold water. Some people think if its hot water it will sterilize everything better,)not so).

hot water does set stains. use col water and don't dry in the dryer
until you are sure the stain is out as the heat from the dryer will
also set the stain.

It depends on what the stain is.
