Both. Ones that make you think are great films. They usually remain in my head for a few days while I figure out the structure of the script. Entertaining films are a release from my own reality. I am able to forget about my own problems for a while.

The best ones do both-American History X, Fight Club. There are really good ones that make you think-Memento, that have scattered little jokes and funny moments, but the movie is still great without them.
Movies that just amuse you or entertain are good too, but they very rarely make a lasting impression-great example of one that actually does is Airplane-but only lasting in the sense that nearly everyone between the ages of 20-45 know at least half the dialogue of this movie, whether they know the source or not.

I like serious movies. A recent example is Brokeback Mountain, and you really think of how the world has changed since the 1960's and how being closeted can screw up your relationship. I feel that two movies with the same theme (but in a different context) are American Beauty and Remains of the Day. I like funny movies, though, but still prefer films that make me think.

Oh, two other examples: Donnie Darko and The Business of Strangers. There are a lot more but I can't think of them now because of the wine.
