everyone is correct but here is some more things they left out
she was molded from clay and brought to life by the goddesses who serve as patrons to paradise island.
her uniform was created by the god of the forge
her lasso from the golden girdle of hippolyta
that she married Steve Trevor and had a daughter that she name hippolyta Trevor who grew up to become the fury and joined the infinity inc.
she became a goddess the goddess of truth. and has an adopted sister Donna troy the new wonder woman.
and the one who almost beat her was artemis i believe who was wonder woman for a short while.

What I know about Wonder Woman is:
1. She grew up on Paradise Island
2. She is the daughter and princess of Queen Hippolyte.
3. She participated in a contest that her mother forbids her.
4. She wore the costume called "The Garb of Justice."
5. Her Golden Lasso makes people tell the truth.
6. Her Golden Belt preserves her cunning & strength.
7. She flies in an invisible jet.

Early in her history there were more overtones to bondage (which is why she carries around the rope) b/c her creator was a little... "off". Diana was princess of the amazons who lived on Themiscara, or Paradise Island (depending on which continuity you are referencing). At some point they decided to interact with "man's world" and wanted to send their greatest warrior-ambassador. To earn the right to represent Themiscara they had a trial by combat which Diana enter in disguise. She won and was sent to Act as emmissary to the rest of the world.
She became a memeber of the JLA...
And during Infinite Crisis she killed Max Lord, putting her at odds with Batman and Superman (the other two of DC's Trinity)
I've never been a super fan, but she is possibly the most unique female character DC has.

She was an Amazon who earned her place by fighting other Amazon women in a competition to become "wonder woman", so she was the champion of the Amazons. She nearly lost to one other, whose name I can't remember, and I think that "Mighty Isis" was the name of the queen of the Amazons. Then there is the magic lasso, that made people tell the truth, and the invisible jet, and she can spin around very fast and look like she's about to blow up. In 1979, when I was in kindergarten, eight out of the twelve girls in my class had wonder woman costumes for halloween, including myself. She was very popular even way back then, and a good role model/hero for little girls.

In original continuity this happened in WW2 although events of Crisis on Infinite earths, and Infinite Crisis have changed this. Currently a member of the Justice League of America. In Wonder Woman's origin story, Steve Trevor, an intelligence officer in the United States Army, crashed his plane on Paradise Island, the Amazons' isolated homeland. she was created by the man who invented the lie detector. that individual would be considered a "sexual deviant" by many. he had a wife, and they lived with another woman, i believe he fathered children with both. the non-wife also wore 2 metal cuff bracelets almost every day.
most of the early stuff is filled with bdsm type references. despite wonder woman's incredible strength, she was often tied up, gagged, even spanked by regular men. she always broke free somehow though.
she's from the island of Themiscyra (spelling?) and almost on par with superman as far as strength goes. she's also the daughter of a greek goddess. without typing a whole page of stuff, thats about it.
