A large percentage of the German immigrants were farmers. Many of their descendants still are. Germans are the second largest immigrant group in the US. Brits are the largest. Irish, despite their whining about being poor, are the wealthiest.
The Germans brought a lot of our favorite foods, especially baked goods like apple pie and strudels. You may also wish to look up educators like Karl Schurz. Many of our military heroes have been of German descent---Eisenhower and Nimitz, for instance.

New York , was New Amsterdam. Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands, which was under German control during the age of imperialism. Yes, not much to do with culture, but they did have a lot of governmental and political power in the spheres of influence in North America.
Go to www.wikipedia.org for a list of traded goods and cultural changes.
