How easy or hard would it be for a 18 year old high school graduate to make a living in seattle? Where are the best/cheapist areas to live?

I would think it pretty difficult. I'm sure finding a job wouldn't be that difficult. It seems that Starbucks is always hiring, and there's one on almost every corner these days. My sister worked there for a short period this summer and was making $7.80/hour plus tips (average $2.00/hour). The real benefit to working there is that you get benefits as a part-time employee.

As for rent...rent isn't really cheap here at all. The cheapest areas are the ones that you probably wouldn't want to live in. If you are up to it, I'd recommend getting roommates. There are many group homes here where people share in the expense of a home. In many cases, it's much nicer than having a small apartment, because you'll have a "home".

Here's what I'd recommend for rentals:

18 and coming from where?

Central District is the cheapest rent inside Seattle, it also has the highest crime rate and lowest wages.

Visit http://www.cityofseattle.net/oir/datasheet/quality.htm and read about different areas and standards of living.

I currently live in Central District and pay $745 a month for an apartment....jobs for 18 year old in my area start at about $8.00 per hour. So if you work full-time with no lost days you would have about 1/3rd of your income to pay everything else...electric, phone, gas & car, entertainment, etc.

Very good luck to you.

My advice is get a marketable skill before you move here. Medical assistants are always needed....bi-lingual people in any language...and sales and service people. Unless you are being recruited by Micro-soft it is going to take a while to get established.
