Here's what you do. Go to your local auto parts store and tell them you want an oil filter for your car. Don't question them about it and make your self out to be a fool. Take it out of the box and study it over very carefully until you are confident you could recognize another one if you saw it. Bear in mind that different makers paint them different colors, so take that into consideration. Now if you plan to change the oil and filter yourself, you will need a set of ramps to drive up on to get under the vehicle. Buy a set of those at the parts store, also. When you get home drive the car on the ramps and crawl under it. On the passenger side or the motor towards the back, you should see something resembling the oil filter you bought.
What's that you say, you are not going to change the oil yourself.
When you take it somewhere to get it done, ask whoever does it to kindly point out all the pertinent facts to changing oil.

If you buy some Rhino ramps, safety jack stands and some wheel chocks, then it's safe to go under the car and find it more easily. Also, you'll be able to remove it and the drain plug a lot easier. Rhino ramps are sold in all the auto parts stores for about $30. Buy good jack stands at a price club type warehouse.

Some trucks in 98 and 99 (I think) had remote filters from the factory. The filter was in front of the L/F wheel, in behind the bumper.

Do you mean Explorer? It is under the engine towards the cab by the oil pan. If you don't see it look a little higher than the pan.
