I will go at this question from parental observation. I say that low level of disease and disability make your attitude and coping style what it is, in other words it goes hand in hand. My dad is almost 89 and has been healthy about all his life. He had bladder cancer about 10 years ago and beat it and had a jeep turn over on his leg and smashed it while in Viet Nam which causes a little problem. He eats healthy and has no snacks but he does drink 2 beers a day. He still walks every day but not up hills any more as that is too difficult for him now. He copes well with the things going on around him and does not let anyone do anything for him that he can do for himself and he does everything for himself but I do go to the Dr. with him as he has trouble hearing. His perception of aging is that he knows he is near the end and has known it since he was 73 (he was sure he was going to die at 73 because that is the age his mom died at). My mom is 81 and sicker than dad and gets around about the same, her coping style and attitude about her condition is poor and she acts older than dad does. So like I said they go together.
