YES. People now days have many different types of baby showers.
Family
Friends
Work
If there are enough people to attend, then that's the whole idea. So Mom has less to worry about what to get. I've known people that have huge family baby showers, then another with Friends, and lately there seems to be a growing number of people having a baby shower at work, hosted by a mentor, or co-worker on a lunch hour, in an available meeting room, restaurant etc.
Go for it.
New Moms especially need all the help they can get.

Why not?

An aunt can still be friend as well as an aunt. If my aunt threw me a baby shower, I'd be fine with it.

Usually it's done by a friend or a sister but I don't think it's really that big of a deal, as long as she gets a shower.

I am really close to my aunt and I would love it if she planned mine some day. It doesn't matter who does it as long as it is someone that knows the girl well and likes to decorate!

Technically, no. But, the rules of etiquette have relaxed and I'm sure it's done sometimes. However, a mother or mother-in-law or sister is a little too close.

well first of all you shouldn't expect anything from anyone, because friends will be there till a certain point, and then there are none....So you did the right thing because your the closest friend that she will love throughout her entire life.....and by the way Good Job.

Anyone can give someone a baby shower.

Only if no one else is having a shower. Nowadays, people don't worry about such things.

Its fine to do. If she has doubts she should ask her friends if anyone else has planned one. If not I say go for it!!
