Actually the reason is so that commercial programming can be seperated from content programming at a electronic level, commercials follow a standard broadcasting pattern, this is how automatic matrix switchers and certain Video Recording Devices can remove the commercials.

It bothers me more than anything. the commercials are paying for the shows and do turn themselves up. I am dreaming of the day they give us a remote with a auto sensor to turn down every commercial.Of course I will turn up the gecko ones love that Little green doll.
