The quarterback position by far, and anyone who argues against this doesn't know what they're talking about. The Baltimore ravens may best demonstrate how valuable the quarterback position is. With Kyle Boller, a very inconsistent and inefficient quarterback, the ravens won when he played his best, and lost when he played average or worse. With Steve McNair, a much better quarterback who can lead a team, and do it all under pressure, the ravens actually are winning the majority of their games, and are considered a contender in the AFC. When Baltimore won the superbowl a few years back, they mainly did it with defense yes, but if they didn't have a quarterback who could handle the pressure enough not to screw it up like the way the Bears screwed it up last year, than they would have never won that game. You only have to go as far as last year to see that the Steelers were nothing before Roethlisberger. Ben is an efficient quarterback who never makes mistakes, and leads his team with fire. Without Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh never wins the championship. My favorite quarterback in the past and of all time is Joe Montana, he's a winner, and the most clutch quarterback of all time. Tom Brady is the best current quarterback, and he could become the best of all time, if he's able to take this Patriot team to the title this year.

The QB has the ball on every play, needs to read a defense, make quick decisions, and get the ball where it needs to go. However, that is why the NFL is the best team game, without the other 52 guys, a great QB can look foolish. WR's need to catch his pass, RB's need to hit the holes, and OL has to do all the blocking to open the holes or keep the QB on his feet, a bad defense puts more pressure on the offense to win games leading to more mistakes, bad kickers make good drives useless, and bad punters give the other team good field position to put up points.
In my opinion, the most important postion on the field is the QB because he is the one that dictates the other teams defense. A bad QB will cause the other team to stack against the run causing the offense to have trouble moving the ball. Obviously you would need to put Montana in as the greatest because he just plain won, if he was on the field, SF always had a chance. Brady is a close 2nd.

I still think that it is te qb and here is why. You bring up a good arguement when it comes to the qb position but you left out 2 major things. Ok first before I get contradicted I am a qb so I know. Here is why the qb position is so hard. Yes any can throw the ball correctly with time but there is more to it then that. You are the offenseive leader for one. That whole offense counts on you as well as the team. 2 because when the game is on teh line and the pressure is on who feels it the most? The qb he has to make good throws and keep the offense composed while still doing his job correctly and effectively. Yes anyone can throw a football but how well do you throw it under pressure? And how good are you at keeping a team together and composed? You are a motivator and a leader, that is why it is so hard to find a great HOF type QB.

Most important position is the OLine in my opinion...because like you said with time any QB can get it done, put up a good OLine and give ur QB time your chances at winning improve alot more than if you go get a superstar at a skill position...if you have an awful OLine ur QB, RB, WR do not matter, at all. Im a huge Cowboys fan and a HUGE success to Emmitt, Aikman, and Irvin and the rest of the Cowboys was their great OLine (and D). That is also their downfall right now...they have their skill positions down but their OLine/D has been weak...

Hey I cannot name names but it looks like Chicago and St. Louis both have a great start this year- very impressive the QB's are fine but I agree that it is the entire team that dose the work- Look a t Trent Green , he's out and the back up QB still got 2 wins! I sure didn't see that coming!

QB, no doubt about it.
i agree football is the most "team" oriented sport (of the 3 im most familiar with), but theres no way n OLB is as important.
i happen to b n eagles fan -save yr hatin, im makin a point- n i can assure u our QB position is by far the most important. c also what its done for already good teams like the bengals, the patriots n especially the bears.
if u dont have a good QB it doesnt matter how good yr recievers r, they aint gonna b doin much for u (eg the cowboys). n teams r gonna play a lot of run D on u making it difficult for your whole offense to succeed as a "team".
n giving the QB time doesnt help if he sucks. denver has a great o-line but it doesnt seem to b helping their passing game much.

As far as individual positions goes. On offense it's gotta be the QB, he runs the show. On defense, kinda depends on what type of defense your team runs. My team uses a 3-4 defense so the most important position is the nose tackle.

the o-line (5 players) and d-line (3 or 4) are not a position, they are multiple positions. Most important is QB (Unitas), then center (Jim Otto), then middle linebacker in a 4-3 (Butkus) or nose tackle in 3-4 (Casey Hampton) , then corner (night train lane)

most important is QB, but most underrated is the LS, longsnapper. This guy has to snap a ball quickly to a punter with accuracy, or bad things can happen.

Woody has it right on the money; you work as a team and you play as a team. All positions are equally important.
