an 8 pound, Italian-made 1938 Mannlicher-Carcano, 6.5 millimeter rifle equipped with a four-power scope

The rifle used in the Kennedy assasination was
a 1938 Italian Mannlicher-Carcano Bolt Action
Rifle in 6.5 mm caliber with a 4 Power scope.

This rifle has a rather clumsy up-back, forward-down
action. Other rifle designs use this same motion but
have smoothed it out much better. The Carcano action
is so awkward that a lot was made of the issue of
elapsed time between total shots fired in the assasination. Many said it was not possible to fire that many accurate shots in the alotted time. Several demonstrations were
made to attempt to dispell those doubts, but none utilized
accuracy of fire as part of their criteria as I recall. The clumsiness affects your point of aim, you see. Rapid Return to Battery is impaired significantly. That means that the time between hitting a bulls eye and following with another bulls eye is lengthened by the odd feeling action of the Carcano. Maybe the Itlaians had a special way of holding it that made it feel more comfortable for them.

Zah

The gun was a WWII ItalianCarcano rifle, caliber 6.5 mm...I owned a Carcano carbine, caliber 7.35, and if I fired in a closed room, I STILL wouldn't have hit anything as it was that bad a rifle. That is why I have always wondered if that Carcano was in fact the murder weapon. You'd have to be a REAL good shot to hit a moving target over 100 yds. out with THAT crappy a rifle...

6.5-mm. Mannlicher-Carcano.. and Italian made carbine

It has a very sloppy bolt action and a short stock and barrel but it fires as smoothly as a BB gun - almost no kick - and it would have been very possible for Oswald to have gotten off his shots with great accuracy.

I had the 7.65mm model (my Dad still has it) it's a kool enough weapon for its age.
