Absolutely not.

In college admissions, your admissions essay is equivalent to a cover letter. (I know, it's not really the same thing, but trust me, a cover letter would cause some giggles, some wondering whether you'll be majoring in business, and then it will be ignored.)

Cover letters are not as a rule used for admissions consideration, unless it happens to be William & Mary, or Harvard or one of those. Not as if I'd know mind you.....I went to Wisconsin! Most colleges aren't that formal.

If it is not a requirement for admissions, only send one if you are capable of writing one that will add something to your application.

The admissions board may not actually read it if it's not required, but a single sheet of paper that is well written and adds depth & character to your application can't hurt you.

If you don't write exceptionally well and it's not required, don't include one.
