How do I fix this or make it go away? It says that the files contained in the folder should not be modified. I know well enough to follow that but how do I keep it from popping up everytime I turn it on?

If it helps, I did just install Yahoo Messenger.

did you by any chance just install yahoo instant messenger? if so, then i'm going to guide you through the process...

go to "start" and then "run"

type in "msconfig" (no quotes) and press enter

go to the "startup" tab...look for something that says "-quiet" and uncheck that box

when done, click "ok" and restart your computer

when your computer is back on, you may get a dialog box saying you just configured the system and blah blah blah...just check the box (so that you don't see that message again on startup) and then click ok...and you should be done

if the system32 folder still pops up, then email me (yahoo email: clnm2000) and i'll help you out (plan b would be going into the registry)...

I would check your system for "spyware" or "adware" or whatever you want to call it.

That folder is the system directory for Windows XP (and nt fam). The programs needed for Windows to run are there. Different types of Trojan viruses like to hide there aswell.

To run Trojans use different startup methods, mostly using the registry. It's possible one of these Registry entries is having an error and just opening the root directory.

okay yeah my computer used to do that, even with the popup blocker like you said.. it's definitely a virus of some kind, but luckily it's not like that major of one.. i use norton anti virus now, but i had to give my computer to someone and they had to wipe out the whole system so it's like i have a brand new computer.. you should buy a windows xp disk. it reboots your whole system and takes all your stuff off, EVERYTHING, so make sure if you have pictures you save them to your email address or something. then, it's like you have a brand new computer and it will work WAYYY faster, trust me! the disk costs about 150$ - 200$ it's pretty expensive, i know, but better then spending 400$ + on a new tower.. you can buy this disk at your local walmart. =) i hope everything gets fixed for you!!! if you wanna know anymore, just email me. =)

Installing Yahoo Messenger should not have done that to your system. My guess is you may have a Trojan Horse virus on your system, so you should do a full system scan with your Anti-Virus software. I'm surprised it didn't catch it when you picked it up, but then if you don't have a good Anti-Virus software package or you don't keep it up to date or you click ok, when you shouldn't have then it's possible you let one in.

Try looking at your Startup Folder..
1) Start--> All programs-->startup..

if not, then it could be a file running automatically each time.. then you need to locate the file and deactivate it. but that is another different method.

I might be able to help you a little better if you could email me the entire error message so that I have a better idea what I am dealing with.

could be that some trojan modifies some files in system32 at startup(usually trojan tries to add itself to important startup files,registry) that's why you get that pop up.
