Write about something without ever saying what it is and without describing it.
For example. Write about a rock. Don't use the word rock, or stone, or granite, etc. Write about the essense of rock as it relates to a situation or to you.
This is an excerise taught at workshops for poets and writers. (Of course you don't have to write about a rock. It can be anything. But try to describe it without alluding to it. For example, describe the telelphone that isn't ringing. It's immoble, inert and litterally as dead as a rock. But the energy that binds it is great. Each atom holding that phone together has incredible destructive power, incredible energy. The phone has power. It is inert. So why does it not ringing hurt you?)
Try this excericise. You'll be amazed what you can come up with.
Good luck.

Ironically, I find that times of sadness or the end of a relationship tend to inspire me most and since poetry can often be an emotional outlet you may want to think of a time when you felt sad, lonely, or heart broken. Good luck with your writing.

Listen to music, it's a great inspiration for me. It puts me in a good mood, or a bad mood depending on what I'm listening to, helps me get into a poem.

A poem about your pet is always nice. If you don't have one write about wanting one. Always a crowd pleaser.
