I think it was interesting that "The Raven" was written during the time that his beloved wife, Virginia Clemm, was dying. The poem was written about his grief, and his inability to accept her loss.

Another interesting fact, was a lot of his writing involved his horror of blood. Three women that he loved in his life died horrible deaths from consumption, and left him with terrifying memories of seeing them coughing up blood. This stuck with him and is reflected in his writings.

He was also absolutely paranoid about being buried alive. This, too, is reflected in his writings.

In 1836 Poe married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia Clemm. She burst a blood vessel in 1842, and remained a virtual invalid until her death from tuberculosis five years later. After the death of his wife, Poe began to lose his struggle with drinking and drugs. He had several romances, including an affair with the poet Sarah Helen Whitman. To Virginia he addressed the famous poem 'Annabel Lee' (1849) - its subject, Poe's favorite, is the death of a beautiful woman.

...
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-time, I lie down by the side
Of my darling - my darling - my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.
(from 'Annabel Lee', 1849)

He set up as the executor of his writings a person who actually hated him. Not the best choice.

That he may possibly have died, not of delirium tremens caused by his alcoholism but of rabies.
