I tried some a couple of times as well. As for closing, ya know those tiny little hair like things protruding off their openings? Well, TWO of those (or more) must be triggered at the same time in order for it to snap shut. As for opening back up, I also found that that could be tricky. Sometimes they just like to be stubborn and stay shut! Especially the smaller ones. Remeber that these do not have to survive on eating insects, etc. alone. In fact, i think i have read that they are fine just living off the nutrients in the soil. They just have the ABILIITY to eat flies. Therefore I would just make sure that they stay in a green house type environment with PLENTY of moisture and sunlight. Best of luck.

Water them everyday and fertilize once a week with half of a regular dose.
Your Venus Fly traps will only close when prey or foreign objects enter the mouth and if they're not closing it means that no prey is being caught. They need to be fertilized regularly to supplement for the low soil quality and lack of prey.

Plus after they close that mouth falls off. Don't mistake mouths falling off for a dead plant!

Could be a combination of things...
Their most important requirements are warmth, moisture and very bright indirect light. They are also very picky about their water... or more specifically, the chemicals in the water. You cannot use tap water. Use distilled or rain water (unless you live in or near an industrial area or city).

This is a pretty good page on how to grow them with some specific information: http://www.thegardenhelper.com/flytrap.html

They don't shut on food when you lay it on one of the open traps? This chick at my office used to have one, I'd feed it bacon. It opened and shut and lived...lol.

You have to feed it or it will starve to death. Give it a little raw hamburger meat. Keep it watered.

first of all it "why don't" not "why doesn't," and second of all, they are native to the south in the swamps, so they must be kept in a hot, humid environment
