In Japan there all Scions are sold under the Toyota nameplate. In Japan, they Toyota Celica is still being produced, however it is a carbon copy of the Scion tC.
Toyota has not confirmed it, but many believe that "tC" stands for Toyota Celica.

The name tC does not fit in with its stablemates the xA and xB because the name xC has already been taken by Volvo for its XC70 and XC90 models. According to Scion, tC stands for "Touring Coupe."

actually TC stands for tuner coupe... the car was designed for the tuner kids out there. if you notice the late 2006s and the 2007s dont come with everything the 2005s and the early 2006s came with .. steel wheels etc.. so that way its cheaper for the tuner kids and they can spend more on putting parts on the car.
