We have never had children before, but are confident that with family support and help, that our children will be raised in a healthy and nourishing environment. What we are seeking here is advice on a healthy conception and pregnancy to ensure that our child is well nourished in the womb. Answers we're hoping for are vitamins I should be taking both before and during pregnancy, things I'll have to start or stop doing, and helpful tips to make things go as smoothly as possible.

Some information; I am 24, this will be my first child, I do not smoke and I do not drink. In our household we have three cats, and I do know the special care that has to be taken with felines during pregnancy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially from mothers who've been there.

Get ypur body in good condition. Go in for a check up make sure every thing is okay. I've got horrid back probs, and my daughter was an "oops". She turned out okay. Go to the dentist make sure your teeth are in good shape. Pregnancy can be hard on your teeth. I would recommend liquid vitamins (pre-pregnancy) they absorb better. Also avoid synthetic vitamins. As they can be hard on your body. Durring pregnancy many women get sick from the vitamins. If you have this problem try taking children's vitamins. Proof has come out that having animals in your home can actually help a child's immune system. The only thing you have to worry about is changing a cat box. Which doctors will tell you right off the bat. Good luck and congrats ~Rosanne~

Stay away from the litterbox! My obgyn even told me that toxoplasmosis can be transmitted via air. Scary huh? I never got rid of my cat though, I've had her since I was 13 and I couldn't ever part with her. If you've had cats in the past you've probably already had toxoplasmosis and are immune to it. Be sure and take a prenatal vitamin with plenty of folic acid. I know you said you don't smoke but remember that second hand smoke is just as harmful to you and your baby. Caffeine is another thing pregnant mom's should try and limit down to about one soda or coffee a day. Good luck, you two sound like you will make great parents!!!!!!!!!!

I echo the advice of taking a daily multivitamin and folic acid. Also, get a pre-conception check up by both a physician and gyno. Start eating more nutritionally if you eat a lot of junk food now. If you don't exercise already, start an exercise regimen up now - it is highly recommended to exercise during pregnancy (helps with labor, helps with baby fat), but starting a new program during pregnancy is generally not a good idea - continuing an already established routine is the best way to go.

Just relax and enjoy the adventure. Vitamins and minerals are important. However exercises all during your pregnancy is of the utmost importance. Walking daily before and when you become pregnant will make for a much easier delivery for you and the baby.. God bless and good luck.

Folic acid or folate (Vitamin B12) added to your diet. It prevents neural tube defects like spina bifida. It should be added to both parents diets up to 24 months before conceiving the child. It can be found in green, leafy veggies like spinach etc. If you don't want that, then there are artificial vitamin supplements you can purchase.

Drink orange juice or take a folic acid supplement. You can probably read up on this if you like. This prevents spina bifida.

It's best to be in shape prior to getting pregnant. You can also start on maternity vitamins. Good luck!
