Button holes are placed on different sides for men's and women's shirts so that it becomes easier for people to identify whether a given shirt is men's wear or a women's wear shirt.

Why obviously it must be because all men are left handed and all women are right handed, er, or is it the other way around? Oh my gawd, now I'm confused. This is absolutely intolerable. Here, out of the purity and goodness of my heart I am simply trying to help someone and now I am mired in some vast sticky inescapeable mental goo. There is only one solution, we must hold a national referendum, and we must ask the President himself to step in. After all, he is doing such a wonderful job bringing democracy to the folks in Iraq, or is he looking for wmd, or is he stopping a dangerous madman from getting nuclear weapons, or is he just helping his poor friend Darth Vader, er I mean Rummy Dumbsfoold, no no I mean the Vice President, Darth ---(can't remember his name, you know, the guy with the shotgun)---- get richer on all those nice contracts to fix the oilfields and pipelines that keep getting blown up when the "insurgents" aren't too busy blowing up women and children and Iraqui police stations and US soldiers and everything else. He is the one we need to help us with this button problem. He will just buy all the shirts and change them around, because obviously somebody got it all wrong from the beginning.

I was told that women's clothes are made for someone else to dress them (the women) so the button holes are reversed and this was a French thing.

So you can tell them apart from each other.I wouldn't want to buy a man's shirt and find out it was a womens shirt, same as a woman buying her a shirt. Then again some women like to wear mens shirts.

long story...
In the olden days men had servants to dress them....
So the servants would button the shirts, and jackets. Women would button there own.

I wondered about that myself. Maybe they think all women are left handed.
