I know how hard it is to be a poor student. But it will be more difficult to be a poor cafe. Let's be reasonable. If you stay so long in a cafe, at least you can do is to offer a little help. You will definitely feel better.

I work in a cafe and there is nothing that peeves me off more than people that do that, especially when we are busy and they are taking up space that paying customers could have been in. It is a business not a friends house or library. If it's quiet and nobody else is ther than it's not so bad because it makes the place look busier and encourages people to come in. Seriously it is not polite and I'm surprised they havn't asked you to move on yet. Be considerate and if you see it getting busy than go to a park and get a take away drink so you aren't affecting thier sales.

Personally, I won't feel comfortable doing that, and I believe your question is a proof that you're beginning to feel uncomfortable too studying all day in a cafe. When you're not comfortable at your study site, your reception rate of the material you're studying would be affected. Why don't you look for a community library and do all your study there, it will benefit you.

You know who I'd ask? My server.
I once spent the better part of the day in a resturant, being served up cheesy biscuits and soda even after I was done with my lunch. Why? Because as I thanked my server for her good job and set about paying my bill, I happened to mention that I was off to the library. She informed me that it was a slow time and that I could stay there and study if I wanted and she'd keep the biscuits coming. I tipped her very, very, very well.
Just saying that it really doesn't hurt to ask.

ONLY if you leave the server a really FAT tip. You are taking up space in the server's station that could be $$ for them.
Some particular tables are more popular than others in a cafe and COULD be a potential money maker if not taken up by a "sitter".
Why can't you do your studying elsewhere?

if the cafe is not busy and you cant afford more drinks then I think it is perfectly ok to order only one drink.
but dont forget to greet the cafe staff with smile every time you enter and leave.... they wont mind your staying there for long!!!

Is there a cafe on your campus for students? Because I find that it's more acceptable in places like that.

i do that too (am poor student too), if its not packed in there, then i always think its OK. i used to work at a panera and people did this all the time and that was always fine with the Co. because it was meant to be a relaxed environment.

if the cafe employees don't have a problem with it, then it's fine i think. but if it does get busy, but one more drink so they can't kick you out.
