an even more negative appearance?

2006-10-12 16:41:19 · 22 answers · asked by wolfmusic 4 in Sports Auto Racing

I think some people misunderstand my question. I am referring to the recently renewed accusations that NASCAR and it's fans are red-necks and idiots and the controversy with the Condederate flag, ect.,ect.,ect. With the concern for the safety of Vickers at the hands of angry fans, Lowes (correction noted) felt they needed to offer extra security. Obviously some feel this was a publicity stunt, however, does the insinuation that there is the question of Vickers safety at the hands of disgruntled fans make the sport, NASCAR, it's fans, ect. look like a bunch of out of control, red-neck idiots- just when the NASCAR governing body is striving to make it a family-friendly sport?

The volume of fans that follow certain drivers have hard feelings for Vickers since Talladega. There have been threats made against him.Sure these may be idol threats from people in a drunken stupor or from an inmature fan that does not look at the big picture. If there were threats made then the safest thing to do for all drivers is have extra security. As for the fans that have made these,"You are not the fans we need in NASCAR and you are not the true race fan"
With the fan freindly base of NASCAR the security is for everyone driver or fan.

No, this does not give Nascar a negative image. And how is Nascar's image negative? Unless some of you are still living in cages then you would know that Nascar is a more diverse sport. The drivers come from all over the U.S. and next year there will be a Hispanic driver in the series. Nascar has opened it's doors to Mexico where there is a race and there will be a race held in Canada in the next one or two years!!

So many people still believe that Nascar is a "redneck" sport when in fact that has been burned to a crisp. Nascar does so much for charity that it isn't even funny. But you never hear about it...all you hear are the bad things.

As for Brian...all of those threats came from drunken fans and they should not be taken seriously. Those people were drunk and did not know what they were doing. That doesn't mean that they were right to do so, but those dummies were drunk. The main thing that's gonna happen to Vickers on Saturday night is that he is gonna get booed like nothing ever seen or heard in Nascar!

NASCAR isn't providing extra security for Brian Vickers. This was a decision by Bruton Smith, Chairman of Lowe's Motor Speedway. He decided to do this because the track had received threatening phone calls from irate Dale Jr. fans.

So, if anyone is seen in a negative light, perhaps it should be the small splinter group of fans that made the threats, not NASACR as a whole and certainly not Dale Jr.

NASCAR did not offer extra security. It was Bruton Smith. This was done not long after last week's race. Apparently, Smith and Humpy Wheeler felt like Vickers would be harrassed by so-called who think they are somehow entitled to behave like 5-year-olds because they have a ticket or a pit pass. Vickers declined. All parties have said in the last 2 days they want to put this behind them.

They didn't have to add extra security for Vickers. They volunteered to do it. They have done it in the past for Rusty Wallace and Sterling Marlin. Nothing is going to happen except for a lot of booing when he gets introduced. The negative appearance stems from all the trash that the fans threw on the track after the race.

Extra security? Where did you hear that?
What he did has been done hundreds of times before. Anyone who knows Nascar knows this and might be bothered by what he did but they won't go any further.
Are they more pissed cause he knocked Jr. out? Probably. But remember... Dale Sr. did what Vickers did on a regular basis and any Earnhardt fan knows that and that's why they won't cross any lines towards Vickers.

Yes it does.Vickers brought it on himself by being so unapologetic in the winner's circle last Sunday. Anybody who follows racing knows that Earnhardt was in a terrible spot on the last lap, and he was not going to win.He knew it too.Everybody with a brain figured that the 48 and 25 would fly right by him.

Vickers is not a rookie, and he can say "oops" all day long.He tried to get fancy and caused a wreck.Instead of saying "I screwed up and I'm sorry", he just celebrated a tainted win like it was another day on the track.Vickers is from my hometown, and we aren't raised to be jerks.
I hope he has good luck driving rice burners next year.

Why would he need extra security. If security is as it should be at the track, Brian should be safe. They shouldn't have to add EXTRA security for this situation. Brian himself doesn't need to go wandering around the fans if he knows what is good for him. The drivers and crews should be professional enough to no threaten him in any way.

I think that the announcement of extra security by the track was merely a PR ploy by the track and nothing else.

Even though I thought is was rather exciting...... not all the fans felt the same way. Vickers does need someone looking over his shoulder this weekend and you can probably expect to see him get spun Saturday night. Unintentional of course. My guy is Kasey, so anything that happens which helps him is OK in my book:)

This is just a media ploy to gain more attention. Nothing is going to happen to Vickers, except all the Earnhardts fans are going to boo the crap out of him during driver introductions.
