If I don't eat small meals about every two to three hours, I start shaking uncontrollably. Does this happen to anyone else? I am only 20 and in great health.

I was worried about it. It has been going on for about 7 years, right around the time I started getting my period. They think it has something to do with that, but they don't know.

TJTB, No not everyone in my family is fine. My mother is on permanent meds, and my grandfather just died from it. So I am worried, but the docs say it is not diabeties related.

You are sufering from hypoglycemia.
You need to eat a good breakfast. Half Complex carbs and half protein. A bowl of oatmeal and a scrambled egg do this very well. Eat the reduced sugar oatmeal. Try to avoid sugar. Eat whold grains instead. Sugar makes you produce more insulin, which consumes the sugar and gives you low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) after about 80 minutes. The symptoms are: shaking, disorientation, feintness, profuse sweating, dizziness and ravenous hunger. The cure for this is a big glass of fruit juice and a few minutes resting. The way to prevent this is by reducing sugar and eating complex carbs and protein in the morning. Eat enough to give you energy for the whole morning and you will actually eat less because you won't get so hungry.

You need to see an Endocrinologist to check out and chart your metabolism before your period. It sounds like hypoglycemia has been ruled out.
Have you been checked for low blood-sugar (hypoglycemia?

Low Blood Sugar Symptoms
Because epinephrine, one of the hormones that is activated by low blood sugar, comes from the central nervous system, the majority of early symptoms of low blood sugar are related to the nervous system.
Common symptoms of low blood sugar include the following:
Trembling
Clamminess
Palpitations
Anxiety
Sweating
Hunger
Because the brain is deprived of glucose, a second set of symptoms follows:
Difficulty in thinking
Confusion
Headache
Seizures
Coma
Ultimately, death

You are not in great heath. If you were you would not be on the path to diabetes. Go to your doctor and have them do a sugar load test. Then once you know start living right. #1 low glycemic diet #2 moderate excercise #3 high quality nutritional supplementation. You may not be overweight yet but with insulin resitance at such a young age you will be.

Have you had a glucose tolerance test done? People with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) do this. You might try eating high protein snacks, like nuts and cheese, or even protein drinks, between meals and see if that holds you and prevents the shakes.

Low blood sugar levels or dehydrated. I us to pass out from not enough fluids when I was around you age and every time I would end up in the E.R. Getting fluids shoved down my throat. Drink more and suck on a hard piece of candy!! Good Luck!!

Your Doctor should do a CBC with more complex blood work to rule out certain disorders. I don't want to alarm you so I rather not speculate. Could be your blood sugar is extremely low? But you need to get a 2nd opinion asap.

small meals keeps your energy supply constant (sugar levels) without overwhelming your (defective) absorption systems. i guess you get shaky cuz sugar levels are at a high.
I don't have your problem, but i got bad guts and am told to do the same thing. because my gut cant' take too much food. it gets bloated up and stuff. i feel much better after small meals.

I started doing that my sophomore year in HS. I would start shaking because I didn't have enough sugar in my system because I didn't eat breakfast, my body had no other way to heat itself other than the natural reflex, shiver!
